weight of silver "marcos"? |

In historical accounts of silver production in Chile and Peru, the weights are expressed in "marcos" and "onzas." I know ounces are a unit of pounds, but what are "marcos"? I've tried to find a clear explanation in the literature in Spanish, but have come up empty handed. Can you please help me?
